AN INTRODUCTION TO BIBLE
St. Jerome insists that “ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ”. Therefore, learning the Scripture is an important duty to the faithfuls because the Scripture contains the words of God which are the words of eternal life (John 6, 68). Hence, it plays a vital role to those who are living in consecrated life.
In fact, there are many questions that we wonder ourselves such as: where are we from? Who are we? Who did create us? And where will we go after death? Etc. It’s really the hard questions to answer but we will have the answer of above questions through studying of Scripture. In the Scripture, God answered to us who we are. We are the children of God, made in His image. “Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.God blessed them” (Genesis 1, 26-28). So God created everything for us. We are going to return to God after death because we are from God.
When we studied the Scripture, we knew that the Scripture is not a book of history, or science. It is a book of history of redemption. Although the Scripture was written by the different evangelists, all Scripture was inspired by God, God is really the author of Sacred Scripture and so human authors is only instrument of Holy Spirit. In throughout history of redemption, God reveals that God loves us. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). He wants to manifest His love by human language, our own language. The introduction to Bible seminar also gave us a general view about canonized scripture, structured Scripture, literature of Scripture, languages of Bible. The Bible which consists of 73 books: Old Testament 46 books, New Testament 27 books. The Bible also is divided 3 kinds against kind of literature: books of history, books of the prophet, and books of writing. It helps us to get the Scripture be better.
To summarize, studying about God is never enough. We study the Scripture not only to know as a subject but also to live as what God said to us. May Holy Spirit enlighten and open our minds that we perceive God will through reading Bible daily. Amen.
